Puppy Proof Your Yard

Get down at the puppy’s level and look around.  Puppies don’t know boundaries so it is up to us to provide them for them.

See below for a specific list.

This is not a complete list and Arizona Goldendoodles does not hold any legal liability, when in doubt please contact your Veterinarian.

What can he/she jump on?

Make sure that if there is something to jump on, it will not help the puppy get into dangerous mischief.

Never assume he/she is okay.

If you want to assume, assume he/she will get into trouble – never assume they won’t investigate and/or touch something.  Keep eyes on them at all times.

Fenced yard

Make sure your yard has a securely fenced and that there is no way for your puppy to escape.  Check that the fence is strong and there are no holes where your puppy can get through.  Make sure there is a secure lock on the gate and that everyone in the family knows how to latch it when they come in and out of the yard.

Items in the yard

Pick up all the toys, lawn furniture, and garden tools that you do not want your puppy to play with.  Expect that whatever your puppy can chew they will.  If there is anywhere you do not want your puppy to go fence it off or they will investigate it.  When you are using chemicals such as pesticides or fertilizer, make sure your puppy is in a safe out of the way spot until it is safe.  Store all chemicals where your puppy can not get to them either in a locked cupboard or higher than the puppy can reach.

Safe around the pool

Goldendoodles love water, but they must be taught how to get in and out of the pool.  Always close the pool gate when you are not in the area and make sure your puppy can not fit between the bars.  If he/she can fit between the bars, temporarily install chicken wire to help keep him/her out of the pool area when you are not there.  Never leave your puppy unsupervised while in the water, it only takes a minute for a puppy to drown while your back is turned.
